A new species of Cerradomys (Mammalia: Rodentia: Cricetidae) from Central Brazil, with remarks on the taxonomy of the genus Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bonvicino,Cibele R.; Casado,Flávia; Weksler,Marcelo.
Cerradomys is a Neotropical genus of cricetid rodents with seven recognized species, Cerradomys subflavus, C. maracajuensis, C. marinhus, C. scotti, C. langguthi, C. vivoi, and C. goytaca. Species of the genus are distributed throughout the open vegetation belt across South America, from northeastern and southeastern Atlantic coast of Brazil to eastern Paraguay and Western Bolivia. Here we describe a new species of Cerradomys from the state of Tocantins in Central Brazil, based on morphological, karyological and mitochondrial DNA analyses. This species is characterized by a medium body size and long tail, dense dorsal pelage, overall dorsal color gray olive lined with yellow, color of head and dorsum continuous, ventral body color slightly yellowish, skull...

A predictive distribution model for Andinomys edax (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Jayat,Pablo; Pacheco,Silvia; Ortiz,E..
We studied the distribution of Andinomys edax (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) in northwestern Argentina. Presence data obtained from field records, museum specimens and literature were used to model the potential distribution of this species. Andinomys edax was known in Argentina from only 41 occurrence localities, most of them restricted to Jujuy province. Here we add new localities from Catamarca, Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán provinces. We used the maximum entropy method (Maxent) and seven environmental variables to produce a potential distribution map of the species. The 7.015 cumulative threshold (corresponding to the equal test of sensitivity and specificity) was the most efficient hypothetical distribution according to the omission rate. The area...

Biologia reprodutiva de Delomys dorsalis (Hensel, 1872) - Rodentia, Sigmodontinae - em área de floresta ombrófila mista, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Mastozool. neotrop.
Cademartori,Cristina V.; Fabián,Marta E.; Manegheti,João O..
Delomys dorsalis is restricted to the wet tropical and subtropical forests of southern and southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina . The reproductive cycle of this species was studied by the histological examination of the reproductive tracts of animals caught in an area of mixed forest with conifers (29º 23' S, 50º 23' W), in southern Brazil , and from observations on a laboratory group of individuals. Fourteen expeditions were carried out from February 1997 to April 1998, during approximately 3 nights, using 140 live traps set on the ground and on branches between 1.5 and 2.0 m high. Reproductively active individuals were observed year round, although winter was marked by a reduction in breeding activity resulting from recruitment. Females showed...

Chromosomal characterization of Irenomys Tarsalis (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) Mastozool. neotrop.
Ojeda,Agustina A.; Ríos,Carolina A.; Gallardo,Milton H..
The systematics of I. tarsalis is far from being understood. Morphological and molecular analyses have given contradictory results, pointing towards its inclusion or exclusion from the Phyllotini. The karyotype of Irenomys tarsalis, as well as its C-bands are reported for the first time. The species has 2n = 64 chromosomes (FN = 98) and a C-banding pattern characterized by small amounts of centromeric heterochromatin. Although the high diploid number and the C-bands of I. tarsalis support the notion of the species´ ancestral karyotypic condition, its affiliation within the sigmodontines cannot be discerned by the data.

Chromosomal variability and morphological notes in Graomys griseoflavus (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae), from Catamarca and Mendoza provinces, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lanzone,Cecilia; Suárez,Schullca N; Rodriguez,Daniela; Ojeda,Agustina; Albanese,Soledad; Ojeda,Ricardo A.

Rivas-Rodríguez,Belkis A.; D'Elía,Guillermo; Linares,Omar.

Distribution of Oecomys catherinae Thomas, 1909 (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in northeastern Brazil with karyotypical and morphometrical notes Biota Neotropica
Asfora,Paulo Henrique; Palma,Alexandre Ramlo Torre; Astúa,Diego; Geise,Lena.
The genus Oecomys Thomas, 1906 is currently composed of 16 species with unclear taxonomy and poorly known geographic limits. O. catherinae Thomas, 1909 is known to occur within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest from the states of Santa Catarina to Pernambuco (where the northernmost previously known specimen of Oecomys in the Atlantic forest was recorded), and along riverine forest into the Cerrado. To gain a greater understanding of its geographical and ecological distribution (mainly in Northeastern Brazil) and of its taxonomic characterization, we provide a short review of karyotypical and morphometrical data from specimens collected within the distribution range of the species. Specimens presented 2n = 60 and AN varying between 62 and 64. A table with...

Evaluating microhabitat selection by Calomys musculinus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in western Aargentina using luminous powders Mastozool. neotrop.
Corbalán,Valeria; Debandi,Guillermo.
The aim of this study was to use fluorescent powder tracking techniques to study the use of space and the patterns of microhabitat selection in Calomys musculinus at the Ñacuñán Biosphere Reserve. The examination of over 3000 microhabitat records from the trails of eight individuals indicates that, in general, the species does not discriminate among major habitat types; however, we found significant differences in the specific categories of substrate used by the species within habitat. In addition, we also note that C. musculinus uses vertical habitats up to 50 cm.

Genetic differentiation in geographically close populations of the water rat Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Genet. Mol. Biol.
Maroja,L.S.; Almeida,F.C.; Seuánez,H.N..
We examined the genetic structure and the effects of a bottleneck in populations of the water rat Nectomys squamipes, a primary host of Schistosoma mansoni. Eight microsatellite loci were studied in 7 populations from the Sumidouro region of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. Our data, covering a four-year period during which a bottleneck occurred, revealed substantial variation (6-31 alleles per locus) and high levels of both observed (0.718-0.789) and expected (0.748-0.832) heterozygosity. Most populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium without linkage disequilibrium between loci. Overall average genetic differentiation between populations (estimated with the F ST (q) and R ST (r) analogues was 0.037 for q and 0.060 for r. There was significant...

Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Udrizar Sauthier,Walter O.; Abba,Agustín M.; Udrizar Sauthier,Daniel E..
We describe the structure and location of nests built by Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. Nests were associated with water bodies. Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. averaged 18 cm length, 8 cm width, and 10 cm height and were found at elevated sites, while nests of H. brasiliensis were a few centimetres above water surface and had an ellipsoid shape with a mean size of 22.5 cm length, 13 cm width, and 18.7 cm height. A seasonal nest building pattern was observed that might indicate that these species construct their nests during spring and summer for breeding. Knowing the biology of these potential pest species of economic and public health importance in a natural environment will help defining an effective...

New host records and geographic distribution of species of Trichuris (Nematoda: Trichuriidae) in rodents from Argentina with an updated summary of records from America Mastozool. neotrop.
Robles,María del Rosario; Navone,Graciela T.
Species of Trichuris have a cosmopolitan distribution and parasitize a broad range of mammalian hosts. Although, the prevalence and intensity of this genus depends on many factors, the life cycles and characteristics of the environment have been the main aspect used to explain their geographical distribution. In this paper, we provide new host and geographical records for the species of Trichuris from Sigmodontinae rodents in Argentina. Moreover, we present comprehensive data about previous records of the genus from rodents in North and South America, and mainly in Argentina. A total of 563 specimens including in 25 species of rodents from 12 provinces and 43 localities from Northeast and Southern Argentina were sampled for Trichuris. Six species of...
